Why Go to Church?

Why Go to Church?

I’ve been pondering this question for a while. Why am I a part of a church family? What is the value of going to a building where a group of people are gathered to sing, to pray, or listen to someone else pray; and then listen some more as the scripture is read, and the minister gives a reflection on that scripture?

Well, the songs are fun or thoughtful and often familiar. I usually only sing with the radio. Singing lifts my spirits, feels good. Praying is good. It gives me hope. And the minister’s words – well sometimes they touch my heart, make me think, teach me something. And when the service is over there is tea, coffee, treats and a time to talk with friends, or meet someone new. Actually, I enjoy the whole experience. When I let go of judgment, or criticism and soak in the Spirit of love that seems to fill the room, I’m glad I’ve come. It sets up my week in a mysterious way. I feel better. Yes, being part of a church family is great.

And then there is the support. The times that my world has felt like it’s falling apart, the times I just needed someone to talk with, those church people were there for me. They prayed for me. They listened. They cared. Yes, worship takes up my Sunday morning. Yes, I serve on a committee. Yes, I give my money to help make it all happen and support the work my church family does in the community and around the world. Yes, going to church requires commitment and sharing. And it’s worth it, more than worth it.

Many people declare they’re just too busy. They like resting on Sunday morning. Surely they can experience God on the golf course, or going for a walk in the woods, or spending time with friends. Besides, church people don’t live what they believe. Just look at what Christians are doing and saying, or have done or said. They’re really not nice people.

Well you are welcome to your own opinion and your own choice. As for me, I love being part of a church family. Over the years, I’ve lived through many moves from place to place. Always, I’ve found friends at the local United Church. For sure I could go, sit at the back, criticize and ridicule what happens. Sure I could lump all Christians in the one basket but I won’t. I welcome the mystery of God. I welcome the opportunity to think about what I believe. I welcome working beside others to try to bring more love into this world.

And most of all, I’m grateful that I believe in God who loves me and all of creation even the mosquitoes and the people I find difficult. When I take an hour of my time each week to gather with others and listen, listen for God, recognize God’s love for me and others, to learn about my faith, to laugh, to enjoy friends and feel their support, it sets up my week for joy and gratitude. I go to give and I receive so much, overflowing blessings

I realize we are all human and therefore not all churches are filled with caring, supportive people. I can assure you that many of them are. My advice to all of you is, try making church your choice. Join the church family. Take advantage of their support for your life. Enjoy giving and receiving support and love to others as part of a group. Join with others in intentionally living a life of gratitude. You just might come to like it.
