God’s Gift

God’s Gift

My study window faces west. Yesterday morning, even the western sky turned a dusty pink as the rising sun painted the entire sky with a blaze of colours. Starting with the brilliant orange ball that peeked over a cloud, scarlet turned to magenta, as its light streaked the sky. A spectacular sunrise, and I thanked God that I was awake to see it. Once the time changes, I’ll be sleeping peacefully when the sun greets the morning.

All this past week, God has been giving me glimpses of God’s glory. Individual trees have been magnificent. Today’s picture is taken from my study window. That gorgeous hard maple tree belongs to our neighbour, but its splendour is free for all who pass by to see. Every time I drive into my driveway, I marvel at the health and beauty of the two potted Dipladenia that grace a flower display beneath our maple tree out front. We’ve had a few frosts that whitened the roofs and railings. Still, these stubborn plants continue to give us delicate, bright red flowers.

And it’s not just nature. I have stopped in awe at so many things. One day my daughter and I made applesauce with great grandson Riley. She video recorded him stirring the colander, his smile wide and happy, his joyful voice saying, “I’m making applesauce.” And of course, the taste and smell of those tart crisp fall apples on my tongue bring visions of heaven.

The glory of God has been surrounding me, day after sunny day. Jesus said, “Those who have ears to hear, let them hear. Those who have eyes to see let them see.” Today I give thanks to God that cataract surgery, hearing aids and the joy of faith give me the privilege and the delight and the gratitude to soak in each new day.

This week I offer you this suggestion. It’s fall. Yes, winter is on the way. For today remember that God lays out a banquet for you and me, a smorgasbord of beauty and wonder. Soak it all in. It’s God’s gift.  Receive it and give thanks.
